There is a Shona belief that when God created the hippo, the animal was so embarrassed by his appearance that he begged God to allow him to stay in the water all day so that the other animals would not see him. God agreed, on the condition that the hippo would not eat His fish. The hippo's covenant with God has been kept up to this day: the hippo lives his life in the water, coming out only at night.
